If you would prefer to opt for a panoramic experience of the city, then Smeaton’s tower, situated on Plymouth Hoe and standing at 72 foot high, offers breath-taking views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room. Originally constructed in 1759 – Smeaton’s tower was originally built on the Eddystone reef. Today this room, in conjunction with the rest of the lighthouse, has been restored to it’s original splendour. Plymouth Sound is ranked as one of the largest natural harbours in the World. Its sheltered waters were protected by the ground-breaking construction (1812-41) of the Plymouth Breakwater (a 1,560-metre stone), which is still a visually prominent and much cherished aid to the Port’s naval and commercial shipping to date and is often described as a feat of ‘engineering ambition played out in the toughest of environments’.

A cathedral city and district of Worcestershire, situated in central England’s West Midlands region, on the Severn River, to the north-west of London and south-west of Birmingham. Its primal location was monumental to the growth and expansion of this market town historically, with its dominant trade route accelerating Worcester’s distribution of goods and produce, stemming from its river crossing on the bridge and positioning on the road network. In the late 18^th to early 19^th Centuries, the city became a major hub for glove-making and porcelain. It once employed half the glovers in England – at its peak this equated to over 30,000 people. With the development of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal came new avenues, allowing goods to be transported to larger cities. Today you can walk or cycle along the Malvern Hills, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and retrace Worcester’s historical trade significance dating back to 400 BC, all whilst taking in the breath-taking views of the countryside. It’s noted that here lies the most ancient rocks in England, which are around 680 million years old.

Alongside, its pivotal location, it was also the centre of Church and wealth, even prior to the first millennium it was the pinnacle of monastic learning. Now counted alongside England’s most stunning cathedrals, Worcester Cathedral was rebuilt in the 11^th Century – to the start of the 16^th Century, the time period and scale of which the works lasted is reminiscent through its architectural formation, which ranges from medieval, to Norman Romanesque and its Pedicular Gothic tower – the 39 misericords in the choir, date back to 1379 and carved with the Labours of the Months. It’s also said that Worcester is home to one of the only two pubs built on holy ground – the Mug House, located in Claines Church -dates back to the 15^th Century. There have been various reports from past landlords stating the pub has paranormal activity, from glasses smashing on their own or strange knocking noises coming from the beer cellar at night.

Another art form that took place from 1751, was the rise and popularity of Worcester Porcelain. In 1751, Dr John Wall a physician, and William Davis, an apothecary alongside a group of businessmen from the local community, established a porcelain factory, with the earliest work painted in blue under the glaze. By 1756 Robert Hancock had arrived at Worcester and was the first man to apply transferring of prints directly onto porcelain. The largest collection of Royal Worcester porcelain in the world can be explored today at the factory’s former building on Severn Street. The plethora of porcelain that is on offer perfectly encapsulates the influence of the time period of when it was produced, showcasing various styles and methods – with works incorporating and deriving from the Georgian and the Victorian eras – all the way through to the 20^th Century.

A further piece of innovation we have to thank Worcester for a means of communication. In 1840 – England saw the arrival of The Penny Black Stamp, the first adhesive postal stamp. It was the brainchild of Worcester’s Sir Rowland Hill a postal and social reformist, who later went on to set-up a revolutionary new school which had heating and a science laboratory. On the topic of invention, we wouldn’t be doing Worcester justice if we didn’t mention one of the most famous sauces known worldwide Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, which has been made and bottled in the city since around 1837 and was developed by Chemists John Lea and William Perrins, who were experimenting with sauces from 1835. On the request of a local nobleman they were asked to replicate a sauce he had tasted in India. Initially after tasting it, they found it to be unpalatable and abandoned the batch in the cellar of their shop, only to discover 18 months later the sauce had matured and through its fermentation it had developed a complexity of flavours and the hence phenomenon was born. The methodology of producing the sauce remains this same and till to this day, the world has been enjoying the taste of this delicious sauce with Lea & Perrins remaining a much loved staple that is used in or on numerous dishes world over.

Historically, a hill settlement, referred to in the Domesday Book as a small market town – the evolution of Swindon is a real Tale of Two Towns – the amalgamation of Old and New- which fused together in the 1900’s due to the rapid expansion of New Swindon to the south and the slower growth of Old Swindon to the north –virtually merging on Swindon Hill – they went on to form one municipal borough. Dubbed as Wiltshire’s ‘Railway Town’ due to the expansion of the Great Western Railway Company (GWR) in the 1840’s – the town’s museum STEAM is now located in the heart of what was once one of the largest railway engineering hubs in the world – the Swindon Railway Works, which opened its doors in 1843 as a maintenance and repair facility for the new GWR – claiming it could produce 3 locomotives per week, it became one of the biggest rail companies globally – and dramatically transformed the then Swindon from a quiet country town to a robust, prosperous, thriving community – employing 12,000 people. The STEAM museum, a demonstration of ground-breaking engineering, with its haven of historic locomotives is a real a sanctuary for any Railway enthusiast.

With a bubbling art scene, artisanal markets and mix of traditional shops and independents and museum, the now modernised and vibrant Swindon is still surrounded by some of England’s luxurious countryside. Old Town, with its historic charm remains a somewhat cultural point, full of tumbling courtyards and alleys, rich in fascinating architecture and the picturesque Town Gardens.

Perhaps some little unknown facts, but the band Oasis, took their name from Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon and super-spy James Bond has strong links to the area – with filming done in the town twice, all in all Swindon has built up quite the legacy.

This town on the banks of the River Mersey, founded historically by the Romans, due to its geographical point of location, acted as a main crossing point. Later it emerged as a market town, with local traditions deriving from textile and the production of tools. The expansion of Warrington was in line with the growth that came with the Industrial Revolution, as the town urbanised it became a centre of manufacturing and steel, predominantly wire. The town prospered when forms of transportation were improved and again when the age of steam arrived, Warrington naturally embraced it, not just as a means of developing transportation but also as an acting source of power for its mills.

To date, this still resonates as the town remains well connected, with three major motorways, close proximity from two airports and only a two hours train journey into the country’s capital. The swing bridges located over the shop canal and the Warrington Transporter Bridge, are displays of fine engineering, manufactured from steel, paying homage to the town’s industrial past. Although the latter has been disused since 1964, the bridge is classified as a Grade II* listed building and protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Wire may not be produced solely in this town any more but the association lived on – the Warrington Wolves, founded in 1876 remains one of the most successful rugby league football clubs in the sport, attracting an est. 10,000 spectators a week, it was once affectionally nicknamed ‘The Wire’ only officially appending Wolves to their name 120 years later.

Warrington is full of interesting landscape and beautiful sights, from Walton Gardens, Sankey Valley, Lymm Dam to Risely Moss. Accelerated by the Industrial Revolution, the city of Wolverhampton evolved from a market town specialising in the woollen trade – into a major hub as a for coal mining, steel production, lock making and the manufacturing of cars and motorcycles. Still prevalent to date, Wolverhampton’s economy continues to be widely concentrated on engineering and inhabits a large aerospace production and service sector. In conjunction with this, Wolverhampton has a long standing association with ornate cast iron safe painting, which prevailed in the city from the Victorian era. Many companies, such as Chubb Lock and Safe Company, expanded on their artistic abilities and their safes became masterpieces – consisting of fine script and hand-painted design, which grew international acclaim and are now deemed highly collectible items. The building in which they were crafted in is now a National Historic Registered Landmark Treasure in 1992 and is it is among the few canal street factories that has been preserved.

Wolverhampton’s industrial renaissance resonates through the architecture and monumental landmarks that line the city centre, from the Art Gallery built in 1884 , to the St Peters Collegiate Church – which dates back to 1200 AD – where you can locate the statue of Our Lady Wulfruna, who it’s said the city is named after.

Once dubbed the ‘Champions of the World’ the city’s Wolverhampton Wanderers were one of the twelve clubs to found the world’s first domestic Football League, now formerly known as the English Football League EFL. In the 1950’s they went on to play a number of floodlit friendlies against some of the top sides of Europe, leading to the development of UEFA Champions League and the Wolves as they are more commonly known, were one of the first British clubs to take part in the competition. The club’s famous colours, black and gold, unique in the English League, originates from the motto of the city ‘Out of Darkness Cometh Light’.

A county famed for the craftmanship of the ‘Staffordshire Potteries’, an industrial area made up of six towns, Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Turnstall and Stoke, which now collectively form the city of Stoke-On-Trent and hailed as the centre point for the production of ceramics in the early 17^th Century, due to the availability of local resources, such as clay, lead, salt and coal.

Staffordshire was a dominant innovator in the development of new varieties of ceramic including bone-china, as well as being pioneers of transfer printing and glazing methods. By the late 18^th Century, North Staffordshire was by far the largest producer of ceramics in Britain and within the 19^th Century, Staffordshire pottery went global driven by demand from large export markets....

Thankfully the industry has remained in the area, thanks to the skills of the local people – and Stoke-on-Trent, continues to be famous for its quality ware which is sold all over the world. Another big player in Staffordshire is the Brewing industry and the county is home to some of the country’s finest breweries. We all know that one of the by-products of beer fermentation is yeast– so (drumroll) love or hate it, but Burton-Upon Trent is the birthplace of the British national staple – Marmite! The factory where it is made has been in operation since 1902 and produces a whopping 6,000 tons of spread a year. For the budding adventurer, then there’s lot to discover here in Staffordshire, with rivers running through the veins of the county, to areas like The Roaches, a wind-carved outcrop of rocks in the Peak District, where you can enjoy the stunning views of the scenic landscape – and on a lucky day you may even spot a wallaby!

With its global reputation for ceramics and pottery having shaped the history of Stoke-on-Trent for centuries, it is its craftmanship within this industry that makes up and lives on as the heartbeat of this city. It is here in 1911, that Arnod Machin was born – an artist and potter who went on to design an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to be used on what came to be known as the ‘Machin series’ of British postal stamps. ...

Arnod’s design was first used on the 4D stamp and issued in 1967, it is said that this design is now one of the most reproduced pieces of art in history, with approximately 320 billion copies made. In 1851, a Stoke born physicist – Oliver Lodge went on the perfect the coherer, a radio-wave detector – in 1894, he became the first person to transmit a message in Morse code – whilst using a wireless signal essentially developing the radio and the spark plug that we know today. An all this – lets not forget that a big part of Stoke-On-Trent once existed under the feet of some of the world’s politicians – in 1834, the ceramics company Minton was commissioned to tile the Houses of Parliament, then in 1856, the Capitol building in the United States of America. The company’s tiles can still be spotted in Melbourne’s State Parliament of Victoria, Washington DC’s National Portrait Gallery, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum – and endless Victorian terraced houses across Staffordshire and the Midlands.

The city is also well-known for producing many a famous musician along with a World’s Strongest man, but it was also the home of a remarkable lady who campaigned for a cancer treatment known for its life-prolonging qualities to be made freely available to patients in England. And it wouldn’t be Stoke if we didn’t mentioned Stoke City FC – one of the oldest clubs in the county, which aided the development of professional football and the League system– and who are affectionately known as the ‘Potters’

In 1850, the opening of the Great Northern Railway from London to York – saw the evolution of Peterborough as it transformed from a market town to an industrial hub, famed for its brick manufacturing, in particular the iconic Fletton Brick or now more commonly known as the London Brick. Peterborough fast became the UK’s leading producer of bricks for the majority of the twentieth century and the Fletton brick contributed to rise to some of the country’s well-known landmark and was used extensively to rebuild Britain during the 1960’s housing boom, Manufactured continuously since 1877, the Fletton brick, originally named after its place of production, rightly continues to hold a special place in Peterborough’s industrial industry.

In 2015 Peterborough won the World Smart City title and continues to share its expertise around the world. As one of the UK’s 4 future city demonstrators, with a real focus on the environment and sustainability, the city is paving the way to a brighter and greener future.
