An architectural and historical haven, Lincoln is a city which was once home to the world’s tallest building, the Lincoln Cathedral which has been an iconic centrepiece of the city for centuries. Had its spire not collapsed in 1549 it would have still held this record for approximately a further six centuries. If you are a lover of literature, then Lincoln is the place for you. Lincoln’s Wren Library, situated inside of the cathedral, displays a vast collection of historic books.
There’s lots of fun history facts about Lincoln, but to name a few… it has got the UK’s oldest canal that’s still in use to date, the UK’s oldest inland harbour and High Bridge – is now the oldest bridge with occupied buildings on it that exists in the UK … and if that’s not enough – it has the only Roman archway in the UK that’s still used for traffic built back in the 3rd century.
For those with a passion in engineering and science then it should be known that it was the birthplace of Charlotte Scott in 1858, the first British woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, who went on to inspire women to become active in the field – and it will be home to the world’s first robotic farm, the concept is thought to be rolled out across the UK by 2025 and aims to use a fleet of renewable powered robots to boost efficiency and reduce waste farming, the project is headed up by the university’s Riseholme Campus.
