Originally constructed in 1759 – Smeaton’s tower was originally built on the Eddystone reef. Today this room, in conjunction with the rest of the lighthouse, has been restored to it’s original splendour. Plymouth Sound is ranked as one of the largest natural harbours in the World. Its sheltered waters were protected by the ground-breaking construction (1812-41) of the Plymouth Breakwater (a 1,560-metre stone), which is still a visually prominent and much cherished aid to the Port’s naval and commercial shipping to date and is often described as a feat of ‘engineering ambition played out in the toughest of environments’.
