  • Ropes  (drop down) A lift rope, cable or belt is what the lift travels up and down on. These must be routinely inspected and in good healthy working order and insulated appropriately.
  • Lighting (drop down) car, shaft and emergency lighting is vital for health and safety, not only for the users of the lift but also for the engineer’s operating on them
  • Wiring (drop down)  Wiring systems must be compliant, all electrical systems installed must have the correct conductor or insulation to ensure there is no mechanical or electrical failings.
  • Landing, Call push buttons & control panels (drop down)  These signal and the direction the lift travels to the correct floor- if these are not functioning properly – it can lead to high traffic flow and confusion.
  • Lift communication and alarm features (drop down)  It’s of the utmost importance these are checked regularly to ensure the autodialler rings out to an active emergency line. This is the one functional site test which is safe for lift owners to undertake themselves and we encourage our clients to check them frequently in the event of an entrapment. If a trapping ever does occur, we aim for our engineers to be on-site within the hour to release the passengers.
  • Car roof top and shaft clean down (drop down) This stops the build-up of dust and debris from accumulating, ensuring the lift is kept clean of any obstructions which may prevent it running appropriately.
  • Lubrication of guides, screws, shoes (drop down) All these components helps with the smooth running of the lift
  • Floor levelling (drop down) The lift threshold should always be at level with each floor it opens onto. Any variation is a health and safety risk and can cause a trip hazard
  • Door clearances (drop down) The design of the lift and what it is intended for will restrict its use By law all door clearances must abide by certain measurements.
  • Car motor (drop down) This is a unit that drives the lift, without one the lift would not operate. In traction lifts it is often referred to as the traction machine and in hydraulic lifts it is set with a motor, pump and valve block.
  • Door tracks (drop down) Keeping the landing door tracks clear of any obstruction keeps the door mechanisms active, if the lift doors don’t close then the lift will not move.
  • Door safety devices  (drop down) These features are installed on lift doors to prevent any injuries by reversing the doors if an obstacle is detected, this could stem from an obstruction in the door tracks or people holding the doors open.

Statutory Lift Inspections:

Legislative examinations and requirements should be undertaken by an external persons or third party to avoid any conflict of interests.

Inspections take place in normal circumstances and can list defects ranging from A-C. Our clients work collaboratively with us and forward through the Insurance reports upon completion so we can ensure any defects are rectified or quoted for promptly and our records are also updated with respect to time frame expectations for the next insurance inspection.

In accordance with the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), specific types of transportation that move people or goods to different floor levels are not subject to LOLER’s requirements.

Although, if the item is being used at work for example an escalator and/or moving walkway, then the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), does come into power.

What is PUWER?

The Regulations stated under PUWER, place ownership and responsibility on people and companies who own or use this equipment, that it must be

  • Suitable for the use it is intended for
  • Regularly maintained and in a safe condition
  • Regularly inspected for any signs of wear to ensure the equipment is functioning correctly and fir for purpose.
  • Is installed correctly
  • Adequate information and training on usage has taken place
  • Health and Safety measures are abided to and equipment is appropriately labelled.

Other forms of vertical transportation, which have been installed in public places primarily for the use of customers outside of the working environment, must meet the requirements of all product supply legislation and have been designed in a safe manner. Stair lifts and mobility lifts are covered under the Supply or Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and conventional passenger lifts must abide by the requirements of the Lifts Regulations 2016.

SAFed is the trade association dedicated to promoting safety and reducing accidents . It represents the UK independent engineering inspection and certification. Here at VM Elevators we are able to provide statutory and non-statutory examinations and inspection services to ensure they comply with national legislation standards. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974:

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 applies to a vast number of businesses, including the Lift Industry.

Here at VM Elevators the protection of our engineers, our clients and the general public from any risk is of the utmost importance.

Before we undertake any work, due diligence is performed and thorough risk assessments are conducted to ensure the correct provisions are in place.

We hold full membership to The Lift and Escalator Association and strongly comply to their guidance and the completion of their annual Safety Charter regulations. Any work that’s being conducted can present elements of risk to those persons directly or indirectly involved. We are also members of the British Safety Council.

Legislation exists to ensure the correct parameters are in place to secure the welfare of the persons at work and others and protecting them via provisions. Our engineers are all armed with training, BS 7255 – Safe Working on Lifts and the ‘Site Safety Handbook’ – published by LEIA and updated periodically and safety refreshers to ensure they abide by the Acts within the HSW Legislation. We also conform to The British Standard BS 7255 Code of Practice for Safe working on lifts.
